Subject: My dog dies at entrance
Place: Blue Ghost Tunnel
When: 5:00 pm Oct. 20,2004

My kids, husband and I, along with our dog "Minuit", went for an outing at the Blue Ghost Tunnel. We wanted to see the tunnel (all except for my eldest had never seen it before) and get some exercise as well. I had let Minuit off her leash when I went over the guard rail to descend the trail. Just as my 2 boys and me and my dog started going down the trail that arrives at the entrance to the tunnel, it started getting very, very windy then rain started to come down very hard. I decided to turn back with my youngest and called for Minuit to come. She didn't come. Then I heard her yelp loudly and my eldest son was yelling that she was hurt. We both went down. My precious dog was lying down at the foot of the path, near the entrance to the tunnel. She wasn't moving. I went to her and could see she couldn't move. She wasn't crying. The rain stopped as fast as it had started. My husband arrived on his bike and called the Humane Society to get her out and get her to an Animal Hospital. She is a lab mix and weighs about 90 lb. so we couldn't move her without help. While we were waiting, I never stopped petting her and talking softly to her. Another couple that was hiking there with their small dog were nice enough to stay with me. I'm not sure how much time passed, she let out a few sounds, whinned a bit and I put a towel under her head. I held her head and she died as I was holding her. I can't even begin to express the grief I feel. She was 5 years old and we've had her since she was a pup. She was my dog. I'm home most of the time and she followed my around everywhere. She loved running up and down hills on our hikes. No one saw exactly what happened. The Human Society worker thought that perhaps she slipped and hit her back on one of the rocks and busted an artery. I just find it very heartbreaking and also strange.... She was very good at going up and down hills... but that rain came down so hard and suddenly, just as she was going down the trail. I also noticed in your investigations, that there are ghost dogs rumored to be there.... perhaps they didn't want her going in the tunnel...
