 Subject: noises Place: Cemetery When: July 1981 In July and August of 1981 I had a summer job at the cemetery in Wingham,Ontario in Huron County. One day in late July it rained so there was no work. The next day it was very cool and damp when we got to work. We usually sat in the driving shed before work. On this day we went into the basement of the chapel to sit. There was an old oil stove and three chairs there. Because my co-workers were all old boys they got the chairs and I got the back stairs going to the main floor of the chapel. After a while I started to hear what sounded like heavy foot steps overhead. All four of us were downstairs and there are no shutters on the windows. There was a fairly loud thump right over our heads. One of the old boys pointed up and said "Well, did you hear that one?" So I wasn't imagining this. When I told my mother about this, she told me that it was probably my Great-Grandfather wondering what the hell we were doing sitting around like that. My Great-Grandfather was the caretaker for about 40 years. He dug all of his graves by hand with a shovel. Paul Staight Stratford,Ontario
