The Burlington Skyway Bridge

In the above photo dated Dec 13, 1957 one can see the almost completed Skyway bridge.

Another crane accident took place at 10:00 a.m. on June 19, 1958 when a boom on a crane fell off the bridge hitting 7 parked cars. The crane operator "Robert Burnett" was hoisting up a steel frame when all of a sudden the crane started to break apart. The boom of the crane fell onto 7 parked cars crushing them. The autos belonged to the workmen that were working on the bridge at the time.....

As stated by one of the workers that had his car crushed, "If this had happened around the noon hour many workers would have been killed." The man further told reporters that "most of the workers eat their lunch in their cars."

In the Canadian Motorist Magazine was a birdseye view of the completion of the Skyway Bridge...

The Skyway Bridge was completed on Dec. 14th, 1957 and at the time of completion the Bridge was the biggest in Canada totaling a length of 8,400, with a height at the center of the bridge above the canal at 120 ft.

The Skyway bridge was the second biggest steel structure in the world, the first being the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California U.S.A. with a total length of 9,266 ft.
